Additional power points and upgrades
Many premises, including domestic installations, commercial installations and catering installations, experience growth or changes during the life time. This will be in the form of extensions to the house or the modernising of a kitchen, or, in commercial electrical installation, it will be changes to layout of offices to allow for extra staff. As a result, the electrical installation changes as well.
We carry out all changes to existing installations including adding and relocating power points and network points. When changes are significant, we coordinate with local supply authorities for the purpose of upgrading existing supplies in order to allow for additional loading.
The electrical installation on the various premises will inevitably get older. In this case, the first point of concern is the Consumer Unit (A.K.A Fuse box), which deteriorates with time. All fuse boxes and consumer units that are deteriorated, or made of wooden parts, require urgent replacement. Deteriorated consumer units, and those that have wooden parts, may become an electric shock hazard and a fire hazard.
The only persons allowed to carry out this replacement, are either Approved Contractors or Part P Approved Domestic Installers.
At completion of all works, the work is certified according to BS7671
Replacing fuse boxes with consumer units
In previous generations of electrical installations the circuits were protected by fuses. When something went wrong with the circuit, the fuse would burn out thus protecting the circuit from damage. Fuse boxes that have been in service more than 50 years require replacing, because the joints and connections deteriorate, which causes joints to overheat during work which may, in some cases cause a fire. Therefore, consumer unit which have been in service more than 50 years have to be replaced.
Likewise, old fuse boxes were built from wooden parts (mainly the body of the consumer unit and the base) and those consumer units in particular are fire hazards. Consumer unit today are much more convenient to use as fuse wires do not have to be replaced but instead of that are settable fuse, usually in the form of a flick switch are installed. When a fault develops in the circuit the fuse will trip and be visible when you look at the consumer unit. The resetting is quite simple, by lifting the switch up.
Besides this functionality, July 2008 marked the introduction of compulsory RCD protection (anti electrocution devices) which will disconnect the electrical supply, should anyone get an electric shock. The disconnection is made within up to 20 milliseconds and therefore, although the person receiving the electric shock will suffer an inconvenience, no potential danger to life is posed. We carry out as replacement of fuse boxes to consumer units in domestic and commercial installations, as well as industrial.
